La Villette Farm

PLA-1014.jpg

The renovation and extension of a 15th Century listed Guernsey Farmhouse in St Martins.

Shortlisted for the RIBA Downland Prize 2009.

The replacement of a single storey conservatory positioned between the main house and annex with a double height kitchen and dining area has provided a light and airy living space that contrasts with the low ceilings of the original farmhouse. The layout unlocks the previous linear circulation of the traditional Guernsey Long House.

The extension creates an internal ‘court’ off which rooms interconnect. The surrounding rooms can either be open to this central space or ‘closed off’ if required thus providing flexibility and adaptability.

The original external granite walls are left exposed in contrast to the smooth finish of the new intervention. Timber panelling is a reference to the timber clad walls and ceiling in the original house.

Painted wood panelled ceilings and walls are decorated with muted colours to promote a light and spacious feel in the farmhouse rooms. Glass panels in the doors allow views and light through the house.

The double height space and exposed granite walls creates drama and interest which is enhanced by the lighting.

A Sustainable Approach

The extension reduces the external wall area of the building and therefore heat loss. In addition, the large south facing glazed screen provides controlled solar heat gain so the extension acts as a heat store dissipating warmth through out the house.

Excessive heat gain is prevented by high specification glazing, over hanging eaves and ‘stack effect’ cross ventilation from low level vents and out though the roof lantern.

A solar panel mounted on the roof pre-heats incoming mains water so reduces energy costs.
